Bronze Medallion FAQ’s

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.

 Candidates must meet ALL of the following conditions:

  • be at least 15 years of age on the date/s of  assessment
  • complete an unaided swim (goggles/masks permitted) of 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities, evidence of which must be provided to the Assessor on the appropriate form prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification

TEN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DOING THE BRONZE MEDALLION COURSE AT NORTH CURL CURL
  1. What is the date of the course? TBC
  2. How long does the course take?  8 weeks.
  3. When does training take place?  2.00-5.00 pm on Sunday afternoons at NCC Surf Club (tbc).
  4. Do I need to join NCC Surf Club to do the course? Yes
  5. What is the cost of the Course?  $300 for new seniors, $150 for nipper parents  doing water safety or patrols, $150 for new juniors, $50 for existing patrolling juniors (fees Senior First Aid course for those who require). Note: excludes membership fees of the club.
  6. What are the main components of the course?
    Theory
    Health & Safety
    CPR
    First Aid
    Surf Awareness
    Communication
    Practical
    Homework – Review of manual and completion of written Learners Guide(online)
    CPR
    Full body assessment of an injured patient
    Run-swim-run:  200m run, followed by 200m swim, followed by 200m run, ..in 8 minutes
    Surf Rescue using (1) rescue board and (2) swim tube and flippers
    Lifts and carries of injured patient including spinal carries
    Communication using flags and radio
    Utilisation of oxygen equipment and defibrillator
    Working in a team environment
    Patrol Experience
    Complete a Surf Patrol including setting up,  patrolling, safety measures, and packing up patrol.
  7. What do I need to bring?
    Wet suit for course 1, Swimmers (no bikinis please), rash vest or wetsuit, goggles, towel.

  9. I have never used a rescue board before …am I capable of completing the practical side of the course?
    Yes, we have instructed many candidates with little or no skill in this area who have successfully completed the course. We will give you extra training and access to equipment should you need it.
  10. Is it a difficult Course?
    Yes, the course is challenging but a lot of fun. To be a qualified Life Saver is an honour but enjoyment is also critical to our course objectives.
