Junior Activities Life Saving is commonly known as “Nippers” and is made up of infants, primary and secondary school aged children, in the Under 6 to the Under 14 age group.
Nippers is a great way for kids not only to learn the dangers of the beach and surf but also how to stay safe when they are at the beach. All of our Nipper age managers and couches are extremely qualified lifesavers them selves so they teach based on their experiences across Patrolling, Competing and just enjoying the Surf.
During Nippers they will learn a variety of skill depending on their age group, some of these include: Rips and Currents; Safely moving in and out of the surf; Board paddling; Swimming; Sprinting; Wading and fun activities and games. North Curly emphasizes fun whilst developing these important skills.
Practicing these skills helps develop competence and confidence in the surf environment. It also allows children to compete in Club, Branch and State Lifesaving carnivals. Through Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) Nippers have the opportunity to participate in junior development camps throughout the season.
Most Under 14 Nippers undertake a Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). Probationary surf life savers can achieve this award from the age of 13 years and this helps and prepares them for active patrolling duties with North Curly. The award trains candidates in rescue skills, first aid and patient management, resuscitation and a theoretical component exploring safety knowledge and surf awareness.
Children can join Nippers in the U6 age group (from 5 years old’s) through to the U14.
We want our nippers to thoroughly enjoy Sundays, whilst further developing their skills through training which is subsidized through sponsorships. Our surf education program is integrated with the senior members of the Club. For those who wish, all Nippers are welcome to compete at Club and Branch levels and above.
As a volunteer organization, Curly is run by parents and the club encourages all parents to put their hands up and help make it a success for the Kids.
A typical Nippers Sunday will include:
9-9.30 – Sign in for Under 6 and U7
9.30-11am – Nipper activities all ages
Note: A child cannot be involved in a Nippers program until they turn 5 years old (e.g. if a child turns 5 on 1st November, they cannot join in or partake in any activities until 1 November
