Surf to Shore – Thursday 21st December 2023

As we approach the festive season, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Board of Directors of NCC SLSC, to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Our Aquaculture 2km Ocean Swim and True Protein 3 Points Challenge, held on the 9th of December, was a fantastic success, with substantial funds raised for our club. Thank you to everyone who assisted on the day and behind the scenes.

XMAS Day patrols – We still need volunteer patrol members to fill 2-hour slots in the afternoon. Please contact Carmel at surflifesaving@nccslsc.com.au if you can help.

This weekend, our patrol members face traditionally the busiest two weekends of the patrol season, with an extended long weekend this week and New Year next weekend. It’s a time when visitors flock to our beaches, requiring extra vigilance from our teams and Council lifeguards. Thank you in advance to everyone who is rostered on patrol or helps out voluntarily during this time.

See you on the beach or in the surf. Merry Christmas!

LIFESAVING

Bottles last Sunday evening were amazing, with our new Bronze Medallion holders and SRCs receiving their uniforms and being welcomed into the NCC patrolling community. Many have already volunteered for Christmas Day patrols, so we thank you for that and will see you on the beach on Monday. We are still short of IRB people for Christmas Day, so if you could possibly help out for a couple of hours, it would be much appreciated – let me know using the usual channels.

The Wiz Cup is taking a Christmas break and will resume on 14th January 2024. It would be a great opportunity for members with realistic New Year resolutions to make good on those and compete for team glory – mark it on your calendar!

EDUCATION

We will be having several training courses happening after Christmas. The following courses are being arranged and dates will be confirmed this week:

Surf Rescue Certificate SRC Intensive Camp 15th to 18th January
We are planning an intensive 4-day SRC course open to any 13- and 14-year-old members and any friends. The course is an ideal way to spend time on the beach learning new skills but also having some fun during the school holidays. At the end of the course we are planning for an assessment for the SRC on the 21st.
Successful completion of the course allows members to do patrols and compete in a wide variety of surf life saving events such as water, beach events and lifesaving events such as first aid and champion lifesaver events. Importantly, having the SRC allows members who have completed a minimum number of patrol hours to claim RPL (recognised prior learning) and do a shortened Bronze Medallion course.

Bronze Medallion Course
This course will commence on the 29th of January and full details of the course will be sent to all interested. An Expression of interest form will be sent out this week to all members. Please talk to your friends and Nipper parents about doing the course. It is vital for the Nippers to have water safety out there when our younger members are training and competing, and the Bronze will qualify parents to assist in this vital role.

First Aid
This year we will be holding several first aid courses at the club. These courses are for a nationally approved first aid for use not only on the beach but also the workplace. For members wishing to upgrade their Advanced Resuscitation qualifications the first aid is the first step and holding a first aid certificate will also be able to be used towards the Bronze Medallion emergency care portion of the course. We will be holding a course in January and February with dates and times to be confirmed.

Competition Official
To become an official, you need to complete three short on-line theory in the surf lifesaving portal and attend the course on the 4th January at 6.30 at the club house. We are obligated to have officials at carnivals based on a ratio provided and if we do not have the officials our members may be prevented from competing. After attending the course you need to attend 2 local carnivals as a probationary and be signed of as a full official in time for Branch. Being an official provides you with a free shirt, a front row seat in the competition and refreshments before, during and after competition. What more could you ask for? The more officials we have the less pressure on our other officials. At the moment we are desperate for more officials to take some of the pressure of our older officials who often have to attend a carnival just to support the club although no family members are involved.
