North Curl Curl Surf Life Saving Club is excited to continue the successful ‘Youth Development’ program under our Director of Youth, Justine Hayward-Smith
There are many ways that the youth of our community can be involved in lifesaving and there are heaps of programs and activities that North Curl Surf Life Saving Club run to help keep them motivated, involved, and that help them get ahead in life outside lifesaving! We run social activities and programs that help fitness and strength in the water and on the sand, and also teach vital leadership and teamwork skills.
We are the process of creating a fun, safe social space for the youth to further foster friendships outside of patrol and training hours, on a Saturday night in a relaxed envrionment with table tennis and movie nights.
The Youth Program is designed to facilitate Under 14 to 18 members in the transition from Nippers into Senior activities. It is an ideal opportunity for young members to gain leadership skills, boost their lifesaving knowledge, meet likeminded members from other clubs and above all the opportunity to have enormous amounts of fun.
The program will include activities that will foster and develop the following:
- Surf Life Saving Skills
- Leadership
- Fitness & Motivation
- Personal Development
- Problem Solving
- Teamwork
It combines:
- social activities
- completions of their Surf Rescue Certificate training (generally at under 14s or 15s level) This is conducted under the guidance of club instructors/assessors.
- training and competition opportunities. A tailored training program will provide opportunities to learn new surf skills such as ski paddling, Mal boards, and Reel Rescue as well as provide time to refine team event skills such as Board Rescue, Taplin, etc.
Our more experience youth members are encouraged to be role models for the younger age groups and take on leadership duties within the club. It’s important to us that our youth members have a voice so each season they meet to give feedback on how to make the club a better place. This season (2018/19) the introduction of lockers, bubblers and access to hot showers made the list of action items to introduce.
WHAT AGES QUALIFY?
Youth Development is for members in the Under 14 age group through to 19 years of age – the age range where we have the least amount of members. We want to encourage fun and friendships, develop skills and capabilities and make you aware of the avenues available to you as a member of the club.
YOUTH CAMP
Each year we send members from the Under 13 – Under 15 age group to a Youth Development Camp, which is always a lot of fun. NCC Youth Development Camp is held annually in September at Swansea Belmont SLSC, Blacksmiths Beach. The camp usually takes place mid-September. Please see our Development Camp Page for more information.
OTHER FUN ACTIVITIES
Last year we took the kids to Wet’n’Wild, with the aim to build team spirit, friendships and to help our broader community by sharing their skills with the Wet ‘n’ Wild nippers kids. Other activities include boxing, crossfit, BBQs and movie nights as well as personal development courses such to assist our members in gaining skills to help them outside of the club.
