The value of our Nippers program was called out in earnest , when 12 year old Lee Melbourn rescued a teenage girl from the northern end of the beach.
Lee was in a break from training, when he spotted the girl in trouble. With the lifeguards gone for the day, he took action and went to the aid of the girl on his board, bringing her to shore just in a nick of time, as she was exhausted and struggling to stay afloat.
Just a few days later, we had another of our Nippers involved in a rescue. A young girl was injured after a water jump went wrong when landing awkwardly on her back after jumping off a bridge at Back Creek, South West Rocks. Alexandra De Graaff, a 13 year old North Curly Nipper, was nearby and saw the incident and was able to carefully and safely move the girl out of the water and stabilise and settle her whilst emergency services were contacted.
As it turned out the girl had initially lost feeling in her legs, and was subsequently transported to Westmead Children’s Hospital by rescue helicopter. She has since recovered, and is thankful for the great help she received from young Alexandra.
Just goes to show how well drilled our youngsters are — well done young Lee and Alexandra !!!!
