Nippers News – Feb 2019

Hodgie’s Bits – February 2019

We’ve had an awesome recommencement of Nippers with glorious conditions. The heat and relatively calm water has led us to more water based – or waterside – activities, but for those more keen on sprints and Flags, don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of that before the season ends. We always adapt the activities according to conditions.

It was nice to have the Yoplait crew on the beach mixing it up a bit for the Mighty 67s and the yummy yoghurt along with a $500 donation was of course appreciated.

Channel 9 generously gave us 300 tennis balls to promote their broadcast of the Aussie Open so we promptly buried them for a fun treasure hunt. I spoke to some mums and dads who loved Nippers v Nappers. The Mighty 67s have their go on 3rd March.

The Club champs are all completed with 13s & 14s wrapped up on Australia Day weekend nippers. The club stewards and tabulation experts are busy compiling the results and checking eligibility including through attendance, ready for announcement on presso day on 17th March.

Parent Session – Saturday 9th February

All are welcome on Saturday 9th February from about 3-5pm to learn a little more about the club and about running nippers. We’ll do a little tour of the club to show off all our equipment and give relaxed briefings on how marshalling, starting and judging events is best run. The idea is to be able to ask questions and learn a little more. You can also find out that a famil is not a family without a y 😉 !

Carnivals Ramping Up

Branch carnivals are in full swing and state champs on the horizon first weekend of March. We’ll have a large, keen and competitive contingent at State. Proud participation is the key and we look forward to all those 80 odd Nippers representing North Curly in fine style decked out in club kit part funded by the club. State Kit presentation and the famous photo will take place on Feb 27th at 8am. Check out Hannah and Anna in their smart black swimsuits competing at their first carnival at Queenscliff on January 26th.

Nippers’ Nipper

This year we have introduced new awards for boys and girls in U8s – U14 – the Nippers’ Nipper which is to be voted on by the nippers themselves. The idea is for Nippers to nominate someone who they think best represents the quintessential nipper. Thought should be given to someone who is one or more of the following:

  • makes it fun to be at nippers
  • good sportsmanship, regular attendance
  • overcoming fears
  • goes out of their way to make friends with newcomers

Age Managers will talk about it in more detail and collect votes over a couple of weeks soon.

Chance to WIN some CASH!!

DHL are great sponsors of Surf Life Saving Australia and are running a comp where you can win $1K (and your club then gets $5K!). Go On, have a crack: http://www.dhlsummer.com. I put a story in but they haven’t featured it …. yet 🙂

Hanni’s Project

Hanneke Wegenaar was our nomination for JLOTY (Junior Lifesaver Of The Year) which gave her the fantastic opportunity to participate in some development sessions run by branch. (SNB = Sydney Northern Beaches.) President Dave and I were very proud to see her receive her finalist certificate on Friday Feb 1st.

As part of the programme each finalist had to develop an activity to improve things around their club and Hanni’s idea is to better connect the Nipper members regardless of age or participation level. There can sometimes be a disconnect between our members who spend most time at Nippers on Sundays and others who are frequently at carnivals. I don’t know what Hanni’s got planned …. or even when ……..But I can’t wait!

Around the Club

There are frequent improvements and upgrades to our club which makes me proud to be a member! We have just had a brand new shiny trailer delivered to enable patrols to stack all the equipment safely on board and drive it off the beach. This will save 30-45 minutes of hand carrying everything up to the club.

Kids Fitness sessions at North Head Fitness (11+ years)

Our Director of Youth Development, Julia Higgs would like to let you know that she will be running sport performance sessions at North Head Fitness. They have fantastic sessions with NCCSLSC nippers (11-13yrs) and youth groups (14-19yrs) combining both CrossFit and Boxing from our timetable at North head Fitness. These sessions will put them through their paces with some functional fitness & cardio to improve their performance on the beach

Register now to secure your place in CrossFit Teens or Muay Thai or sport performance classes starting next week at https://northheadfitness.com.au. They are also an Active Kids provider so you can use your voucher 🙂 They might have to organise a parents session and show them how it’s done!

PLEASE keep involving yourselves in the Nippers sessions

We need to always reinforce that Nippers is a family participation activity. Our Age Managers and regular helpers really need ALL parents to get involved. If you’re not a capable swimmer or runner, it truly doesn’t matter as there are lots of roles to play including just helping to encourage and guide kids in the right direction. Thanks to all of you who help us out each week – we couldn’t do it wit out your assistance.

If you are particularly enjoying being involved please note that each fortnight, we hold a Senior Club Events on a Sunday at 11am. Meeting by the southern Red and Yellow flags, our Club Captain extraordinaire, Alex ‘Wiz’ Wye, organises us to take part in an ocean swim, board race, beach sprint and flags race. No specialised skill level necessary, only enter what you feel comfortable in (would be helpful if you could swim!!) and if you are already part of a patrol at the club, you will also earn a point for every event you enter. It’s fun, friendly, open to ALL and a great way to meet fellow members! Come and join us. Next event is February 17th and fortnightly thereafter until the end of the season.

Xtend Barre Northern Beaches

Speaking of fitness opportunities, Xtend Barre Northern Beaches are adding to their amazing collection of studios across the beaches.  Already located in Mosman, Manly and Mona Vale, Xtend Barre Dee Why is opening very soon!

Xtend Barre takes elegant pilates and dance inspired moves and adds the exhilaration of a high intensity workout. Designed to help you feel the power, feed the determination and see amazing results. The full-body workouts have been created to empower everyone to improve their fitness levels. It builds strength, cardio and confidence to everyone from first timers to hardcore workout warriors. Xtend Barre will help you sculpt, chisel and lengthen muscles with high energy classes for everyone at every level.

To celebrate their impending opening, the great people at Xtend Barre Northern Beaches would like to run a fun, free Xtend Barre class for our Nipper mums (and dads?). Details to be confirmed but perhaps in the club during Nippers one week. Let Hodgie know if you’re keen at nippers@nccslsc.com.au – it’ll be fun, a good thing to do with club colleagues – and free!!!!

You can also visit www.xtendbarre.com.au/northernbeaches for more information on this awesome workout.

Hodgie’s Heros…..

We all love seeing our Nippers smiling and having fun. The Under 6s might just be the smiliest ever bunch of kids you could meet. Every U6 is my hero because they seem to know how to have sooooo much fun. (Don’t forget to thank your age managers – they play quite an important role in those smiles 🙂 )

Nippers literally cannot run, it’s not allowed to, without water safety. We are required to have a specified ratio of qualified, identified safety ppl to each proficiency qualified Nipper. Many are blissfully unaware of how this comes together in the background. Thanks to all. There are many parents who volunteer as needed. Thanks. There’s two guys who front up each week and cover each other’s absences. Chris Sparkes and Simon Davies – you two are bloody legends and Hodgie’s Heroes.

Funny – eventually….

A different sight at our beach late afternoon on Saturday 12th January as the lifeguard announced that some numbskull had lost their keys. The few hundred on the beach were all sifting through the sand near them to find keys – to no avail. They belonged to a certain well-loved life saver and board member so could have been anywhere as he’d been on all parts of the beach during his patrol.

It was quite serious and disturbing as they contained keys to all parts of the club plus car, house etc. Wiz was quite upset…….They finally turned up where he’d left them safely in the patrol room. Let’s not pretend we have all had our ‘moment’ like this! We were all so relieved they were found.  Many thanks to all who helped to look for them 🙂

Funny/not funny!

If you think swimming with the dolphins is expensive, swimming with sharks cost me an arm and a leg.

I opened my electricity bill at the same time I opened my water bill. Needless to say: I was shocked!

What did the pirate say on his eightieth birthday? Aye Matey

I used to be addicted to the hokey pokey…But I turned myself around.

What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho Cheese.
